Headhunted Again?

by Caroline
(UK)

I worked for a company where they really exploited their staff and I knew I was being paid around £10K less than the market rate for my role, despite being in a very specialized role.

However, I got approached all the time from other companies wanting to headhunt me. When they asked what I was being paid, I simply stated that my employment contract forbade me from revealing this.

I never lied about my salary. And I wasn't lying about the contract either - it specifically mentioned this as the company had been caught underpaying people who did the same job recently.

They always overestimated and I'd go back to my current bosses explaining that I'd been headhunted and wanted them to match the salary I'd been offered. Scared of losing their most knowledgeable member of staff they always agreed.

I must admit whenever I wanted a bit more money I'd just wear an "interview suit" to the office and suddenly I'd get a raise!
