Good Interview Questions to Ask
HR Recruiters

Knowing which interview questions to ask HR will help you meet your interview objectives.

When interviewing with a recruiter you have one objective: To move through to the next step in the hiring process.

To reach that objective you need to achieve three goals.

  1. Make sure she likes you.
  2. Make certain she understands that your qualifications meet the needs of the position.
  3. Make sure you give her no possible reason to eliminate your candidacy. (I.e. Don't throw any red flags.)

Be mindful of these goals during all of your interactions with a human resources representative.

Questions to Ask HR Representatives

The following are questions you can ask to help establish a rapport with the Human Resources Interviewer.

  • How long have you been with the company?

  • Why do you enjoy working here?

Notice that these questions are about the interviewer. Help her like you. You do that by getting her to talk about herself.

To achieve your second goal of convincing a recruiter you are competent, use your accomplishment stories to illustrate your capabilities. This interview is not the time to dazzle someone with your technical know-how. Do not ask technical questions you know the interviewer can't answer. The last thing you want to do is make this person feel stupid.

As for the third goal...human resources recruiters and third party recruiters strive for similar objectives. Both are charged with the task of finding good candidates for the hiring manager to interview.

Unlike 3rd party recruiters however, HR recruiters are also charged with the task of eliminating any candidate that has the potential to harm the company. Neither of these recruiters have the authority to hire you. But they can and will take you out of consideration.

Recognize also that the Recruiter's reputation is on the line with every candidate she allows through to the next step in the hiring process. Make it easy for her to recommend you by convincing her of your competence.

Also, do not ask any questions about insurance benefits, salary, vacations or anything else you are hoping to get. This information may be offered. But if not, do not ask. Rest assured that if an offer is forthcoming, you'll learn about these things then.

When interviewing with HR, if the information is not offered, you should find out what happens next in the company's hiring process before you leave. Here are interview questions to ask that will help you accomplish that .

In addition to asking the right questions knowing how to ace an interview as well as understanding the interviewing do's and don'ts and how to handle common job interview questions will give you an added edge in winning the job.
