Interview Questions to
Ask the Hiring Authority

Knowing which interview questions to ask the hiring authority can rocket your candidacy to the head of the line.

When interviewing with the Hiring Authority you must:

  • Demonstrate that you "get it". (I.e. You understand that having this function performed successfully contributes to her success.)
  • Make sure she likes you.
  • Make sure she understands how your qualifications meet her needs.
The first objective is your most important one. Ninety nine percent of the candidates who interview have no idea how to do this. That's why asking the right questions of the hiring manager will move you to the head of the line!

Questions to Ask the Hiring Manager

  • What could I do immediately upon starting that would most relieve your work load?

  • How do you measure success in this position?

  • What are the most challenging aspects of this job?

  • How would you describe your ideal employee?

  • What type of person would thrive under your management style?

All of these questions show you get it because they are about the hiring manager's needed outcomes. Notice they are all phrased from the hiring manager's perspective.

    Not

"What must I do to succeed?"

    But rather

    "How do you measure success?"

With your list of possible questions in hand choose to ask at least two that demonstrate you get it. (Don't ask more than 3 to 5 questions total.) It's a sure bet that your competition will fail to do so giving you a definite employment edge.
