Interview Questions to Ask
for a Good Job Fit

Do you really want this position? Find out by asking the right interview questions.

Your number one objective in every interview situation is to make the interviewer excited about hiring you. Beyond that you must also meet your own needs.

Your personal objectives remain constant no matter who you meet with. They are:

  • Determining whether the position is a good match for you.
  • Understanding where your candidacy stands.
  • Understanding what happens next in the hiring process.

The following questions can be asked of either HR Recruiters or Hiring Managers.

Job Fit Questions

  • What kind of decision making authority would I have?

  • Where does this position fit within the organizational hierarchy?

  • Why is this position available?

  • How quickly are you looking to hire someone?

  • How many people have held this position in the last 5 years?

  • What happened to the person who held this position last? (Was she promoted or fired? Did she quit?)

Candidacy Status Questions

  • Based on what you know so far do you feel I'm a good match for this position?

  • Do you have any reservations about my candidacy?

  • How many people are you interviewing for this position?

  • Where does my candidacy stand in comparison to the other people you've interviewed?

  • When do you anticipate making a decision?

  • What is the next step in your hiring process?

  • When should I hear from you regarding the next step?

  • Is there any additional information I can provide that will help you make a decision?

  • May I have your business card?
Your questions regarding the status of your candidacy are equivalent to the checking questions asked during the sales process. You need to know whether the interviewer has any unspoken objections so you can address them while you have the chance.

You also need to understand the company's hiring process so you can follow up appropriately. Don't be afraid to ask.

Most importantly you need to know which interview questions to ask to make the hiring manager want you as an employee or help HR comfortably move forward with your candidacy.

All of the questions presented on this site are designed to help you achieve these goals.
