Interviewing Attire

Your interviewing attire is a key element in making that all important great first impression.

Many people have trouble knowing what to wear to an interview. That's because the importance of wearing appropriate clothes and being well groomed carry so much weight.

Here are some tips, suggestions and things to consider as you make those important decisions.

General Interview Attire Guidelines

When dressing for an interview keep in mind that you want to project an image of competence. It's not a beauty or fashion contest. Your look should be current but being 'fashionable' is not a consideration. Having said that, there are no hard and fast rules.

Some of your choices will be dictated by your city or the part of the country you live in as well as the industry you're targeting with your search.

When it comes to your interview attire it's better to be conservative rather than avant-garde, darker colors are better and for most positions a suit is your safest option.

Wool gabardine is a good fabric choice as it tends to be wearable year round. It also resists wrinkles and is long lasting. Blends that are primarily wool can be good choices too.

You can dress a suit up or down depending upon the position for which you're interviewing. Vary your look with different shirts/blouses and accessories. Shoes should coordinate with your outfit and looked well cared for.

When interviewing for a position in a conservative industry, avoid loud prints. Choose a white shirt or blouse and subdued accessories.

When interviewing for positions that require creativity and imagination your attire can and should reflect yours. Choose a blouse, tie or other accessories that add more color and personality.

The bottom line on interview attire is this: use common sense. Base your decisions on the company and position as well as on the accepted norm in your part of the country.

Remember: It's better to be too conservative than too flamboyant. So if you're going to err, do so on the side of conservatism.
