Why I'm worth more now than my salary history

by Elizabeth Bauer
(Charlotte NC)

I have been in the position of being asked for my salary history at an interview for a new job. Refusing to give it did not seem like a good idea, but I was asking for quite a bit more in compensation than my previous job had paid. I gave very good reasons for the requested jump in salary. I had learned so much at my last employment. I was now experienced in many more areas than I was before. My last employer had given me the experience that I would be bringing to the new employer. In essence, I had paid for my training with a lower salary. I was now experienced and would expect a larger salary.
I did get the job.
